Ma mère a mieux suivi la météo de l'Île de la Réunion que moi pendant mon séjour dans le Minnesota cet été. (J'étais dans le Minnesota cet été pour travailler comme boulangère et monitrice aux Concordia Language Villages.) Selon elle, il faisait frais à Saint-Denis en août, 55°F. Cependant, quand nous avons recherché la météo de Saint-André, nous avons trouvé qu'il faisait 78°F. Et il pleuvait. Pour comparer, un jour quelconque en août dans ma ville dans la Caroline du Nord il faisait 94°F.
Les États-Unis se trouvent dans l’hémisphère du nord et donc subit l'été généralement de mai à septembre et l'hiver de mi-novembre à mi-mars. Nous avons nos quatre saisons distinctes. Par contre, Île de la Réunion se trouve dans l'hémisphère du sud, près du tropique de Capricorne. Étant une île tropicale, elle ne subit que deux saisons principales: la saison sèche et la saison pluvieuse. La pluie quotidienne n'est pas mal, normalement.
La côte ouest est seche et a les belles plages et lagons. La côte est a un littoral rocheux et est généralement plus venteuse et pluvieuse de l'ouest.

Vu que les ouragans Harvey, Irma, Jose et Katia dominent l'attention de l'Est des États-Unis, vous n'auriez pas su auparavant, mais des typhons peuvent se produire à la Réunion pendant la saison pluvieuse (décembre à mars).
En fait, la Réunion est directement en voie des typhons et cyclones tropicales qui passent de l'est à l'ouest dans le sud de l'Océan Indien.
Ma mère m'a posée davantage de questions sur la vie que j'aurai en une semaine. Elle voulait savoir, par exemple, "vous êtes combien d'assistants de langue à la Réunion, à Saint-André?"
De notre groupe Facebook, je sais qu'il y a 20 assistants d'anglais à la Réunion en tout, la nationalité de la majorité étant des Américains. Il y a au moins quatre de la Caroline du Nord qui enseigneront à la Réunion (une copine de classe d'UNC et deux que mes amis connaissent; vous voyez que le monde est petit). Une de ces quatre que je sais habiter dans la Caroline du Nord va être dans la même ville de moi. Une autre personne sera à Saint-Denis. En tout il y aura environ 40 assistants de langue; ils habiteront à l'est, au sud, au nord... Nous serons un peu partout à la Réunion!
En plus de ma mère, mes amis sont curieux de la vie à la Réunion. Ils veulent savoir:

My mother followed Reunion Island's weather better than I did during my stay in Minnesota this summer. (I was in Minnesota working as a baker and camp counselor at the Concordia Language Villages.) According to her, it was very cool in Saint-Denis in August, 55°F. However, when we looked up the weather in Saint-André, we found that it was 78° F. And it was raining. For comparison, on a given day in August, in my hometown in North Carolina it was 94°F.
The US is found in the northern hemisphere and thus experiences summer, generally, from May to September and winter from mid-November to mid-March. We (in the continental US) have four distinct seasons. By contrast, Reunion Island is in the southern hemisphere, close to the Tropic of Capricorn. Being a tropical island, it really only experiences two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The daily rain isn't bad, normally.
The west coast is dry and has the beautiful beaches and lagoons. The east coast has a rocky shoreline and is generally windier and rainier than the west.

Seeing as Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Katia dominate the attention of the Eastern United States, you might not have known this before, but typhoons can occur in Réunion during the rainy season (December through March).
In fact, Réunion is directly in the path of typhoons and tropical storms that move from east to west in the southwestern Indian Ocean.
My mother asked me more questions about the life I will have a week from now. She wanted to know, for example, "How many language assistants are there in Réunion, and in Saint-André?"
From our Facebook group, I know that there are about 20 English language assistants in Réunion in total, most of whom are Americans. There are at least four people from North Carolina who will be teaching in Réunion (one classmate from UNC and two who my friends at other schools know; small world.) One of these four that I know of will be teaching in the same town as me. Another person will be in Saint-Denis. In total there will be about 40 language assistants; they'll be living in the east, the south, the north... We will be all over Réunion!
In addition to my mother, my friends are curious about life in Réunion. They want to know:

Plein de divertissements s'offrent aux aventuriers et aux touristes. On peut visiter le Temple hindou du Colosse, goûter du rhum à la distillerie Savanna, ou faire du flyboard.

D'abord, j'aimerais m'enseigner la méthodologie du design graphique et peut-être m'apprendre HTML. Si j'atteignais ce but, je voudrais dessiner des cartes postales ou des t-shirts (à vendre aux États-Unis). Peut-être que je peux faire le blog sur les sites-web de mes deux écoles parce qu'elles ont très peu de publications et ce serait bien de pouvoir montrer ce que font les élèves de jour au jour. En tout cas je pourrais faire du soutien scolaire privé en anglais si des élèves s'intéressent à parler anglais avec moi hors la salle de classe.C'est ma dernière semaine aux États-Unis pour les prochains huit mois. Je commence de m'en rendre compte.

My host teacher in Saint-André asked me if I was safe during the flooding of Houston, Texas. I assured her that North Carolina had not been affected by Hurricane Harvey, luckily.

What will be your second job?
First, I would like to teach myself the methodology behind graphic design and maybe learn HTML. If I achieve this goal, I want to design post cards or t-shirts (to sell in the US). Maybe I could blog for the websites of my two schools because they have very few blog posts and it would be nice to be able to show what the students do from day to day. In any case I could do English tutoring if my students want to speak in English with me outside the classroom.It's beginning to hit me: this is my last week in the United States for the next eight months.
